Signs of something?
Signs can be so helpful. When I first came to Living Faith Church I couldn’t find where the church was in Grimshaw Street. The church and the sign were too far back from the road. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before an excellent well lit sign was placed nearer the footpath and I could more easily find my way here. If you don’t know where you are then signs are worth their weight in gold!
This is what John’s Gospel highlights about Jesus. John doesn’t talk about miracles he talks about “signs”. According to John’s description of Jesus’ ministry, Jesus does things that are “signs” that give clues as to the real identity of the person doing them.
So Jesus changes water into wine. Amazing yes! But who is asks John who can change one created substance into another. We the readers already have a clue because John revealed in chapter 1 that the one who made everything, the Word of God, became flesh and lived among us. The water into wine is a sign that the one who creates both water and wine is right there in front of them. If they read the signs correctly how should they react?
John says,
This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. Jn 2:11 NIV
Yes, that’s right, good old fashioned faith- in other words trust.
People to this day still try to say that Jesus was just a really great bloke, or just one of many inspiring God filled souls, but John points out that the ‘signs’ are all there that Jesus is so much more.
What about you? Do you entrust your whole life to him because the creator has earned it from you, or do you merely take his advice as if he is merely a good teacher or a wise soul. Many people undervalue Jesus because they do not read the signs. But for those who do read them and take the grand adventure with Jesus then he more than rewards the simple trust we put in him.
He can take your life and change it from water to wine. Will you trust him to do that? Let go of what you have and let him transform it as only a Creator can!
