Jesus Is Presented
A week after Jesus’ birth, he is circumcised and named and later taken to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented there, to fulfil the requirements of their religious tradition. This fact is less important than what happened in the temple when he arrived. It is enough to know that Jesus’ parents were obedient to their faith. Luke’s concern is to show us through the telling of Jesus birth, God’s purpose in it all. Both Elizabeth and Mary have given prophetic expressions of God’s purpose for Jesus. Then Joseph and Mary are forced to travel to Bethlehem where they found now room so the baby is laid in a manger. Jesus is born in poverty, and his visitors are the lowest of the low; the shepherds who become his first missionaries. Now Jesus comes for his first visit to the temple, the centre of faith and authority, and there God’s purpose for him is again revealed.
As a precursor to the temple visit we are told about his circumcision and naming. His parents obediently name him Jesus as they were told earlier by the angel (Chapter 1: 31-32). It is a clear claim for Jesus Messiahship. Literally the name is Joshua which means God’s salvation. God’s purpose with Jesus birth is a new Kingdom of salvation.
After they enter the temple they make their sacrifice. The sacrifice of the poor. The theme of poverty continues. Jesus has come from the poor as a saviour for the poor and it is only as we recognise our poverty that we are able to accept his salvation.
Next they meet Simeon. He is an old respected believer, inspired by the Holy Spirit to recognise Jesus. He speaks of Jesus mission for the gentiles and the conflict he will bring within Israel. He also alludes to his rejection and suffering.
Finally they meet Anna who is another respected person in the temple for the length of her devotion. She has effectively spent her whole adult life worshipping God in the temple. As a kind of confirmation for Simeon, also inspired by the Holy Spirit, she also recognises him with messianic language.
God’s purpose is clear. This child is the Messiah who comes to set people free, to bring them salvation; to initiate a new era inspired by the Holy Spirit, to include them in God’s Kingdom. It is revealed in no less a place than the temple, the house of God.
