Healthy Bread

I am not very comfortable shopping at the supermarket. Even when I stand at the bread display there are so many loaves with packaging, making so many claims about how good they are for my health. Which one should I choose? My solution is to pull out my mobile phone and ring Maureen and ask her, and because she has done the research and compared the products, she easily tells me what to buy. In John 6, Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” For some people who heard him that was a bit hard to swallow. They wanted another brand. Jesus is obviously using a metaphor. He is alluding to the story of Manna in the wilderness, when God miraculously provided for the children of Israel, when they had no food. He is also alluding to the communion, when we share bread as the body of Christ. Bread is the staple food for life and Jesus is saying that believing in him is the staple food for Spiritual life. This is the food that can give Eternal Life. When I speak of Spiritual life I don’t mean something particularly religious. I mean that Jesus is the food that provides the foundation for our values and relationships. If we want a healthy life basis for our lives then this is where it comes from. When I speak of Eternal Life I do not means heaven when we die. Eternal Life is not just about length, but about a quality of life that is worth living forever. Jesus is the source of that quality of life. So if you want to be really healthy regardless of how your body feels, then Jesus can give you that life, if you will feed on him. This doesn’t just mean going to Communion every Sunday. It means taking into yourself his values, his quality of life. That means learning from him through study and putting that learning into practice. It means believing in him and putting that faith into action. It means taking his life into your life and becoming like him. Now, that’s Healthy.
